As you may have read on the numerous websites about CBD skincare products, you may have noticed that some companies will mention how many milligrams of CBD are in the serum, cream, mask, or lotion product.
Typically, milligrams are used for dietary foods, supplements and drugs. The reason that milligrams are used on these products is to know the dosage amount or servings amount in a certain size or quantity of a food, supplement or drug.
Why all of a sudden are CBD Skin Care products listing the milligrams CBD amount on the label?
A Few Questions to Ask Yourself
Have you ever bought or used a skincare serum or a moisturizer that has a plant extract such as green tea extract or other plant extract in it? Probably yes.
Did that serum or moisturizer label tell you how many milligrams of green tea extract is in the serum bottle or moisturizer jar? Probably no or never.
Why have skincare companies not been putting the milligram amount of each ingredient on the ingredient label or container?
Drug, Supplement, Food....or are we using and selling skincare
Since CBD is relativity new in skincare products, everyone appears to be applying the dietary food, supplement and drug measurement of milligrams to CBD skincare products.
As you read websites, they mention that to determine the potency of the product one needs to know the "milligrams" in the CBD product. However, we are talking about cosmetic skincare ingredients and not dietary foods, supplements, or drugs.
What About Percentage?
Most skincare companies do not want to provide the percentage amount of ingredients because they view that as proprietary to their formulation. And the FDA does not require a skincare company to provide the percentage of a cosmetic ingredient on the label in a skincare product, let alone milligrams. If the ingredient is a drug or the intended use is a medical claim, then that is different.
Did You Know? Quantity versus Percentage
Most individuals will generally assume that the higher milligram number makes the CBD skincare product more effective so they shop for the highest milligram number.
When it comes to cosmetic formulations, we formulate using percentages.
Example: XYZ Company CBD Face Serum
1 fl. oz/30 ml. serum with 500mg of CBD on the label.
In calculating the percentage of CBD in this serum, we would arrive at approx. 2%(1.7% rounded up) of CBD in 1 fl. oz. bottle of serum.
Flawed thinking would be that one small drop of serum applied to the skin gives 500mg of CBD. You would need to apply one full dropper to get approx. 16 mg of CBD or half a dropper to get approx. 8 mg of CBD.
Another example: ABC Company CBD Face Serum
1 fl. oz/30ml. serum with 250mg of CBD in the entire bottle
This calculates to approximately to .83% of CBD in 1 fl. oz of serum. That is less than 1% of CBD in 1 fl. oz. of serum.
When it comes to formulating with plant extracts in cosmetic formulations, there tends to be a recommended percentage range, such as .25%-1% or more or even less. The amount of a plant extract added to a formulation is left up to the companies discretion.
